Collective bargaining is the process in which a Union’s members negotiate contracts with their employers to determine their terms of employment, including pay, benefits, hours, leave, safety policies, ways to balance work and family and more.
Prior to collective bargaining with the employer, the NSNU invites all members to participate in a Bargaining Survey. The survey results are discussed by the Board of Directors and the Provincial Negotiating Committee (PNC) during a Proposal Development Conference. Based on the priorities of the members identified in the survey and other forms of feedback during the President’s Tour, proposals are determined, which are then formally presented to the employer during negotiations.
When the PNC feels the negotiated tentative agreement is the best possible offer from the employer, the agreement will be voted on by NSNU members. A majority vote is needed to ratify an agreement.
Although the NSNU bargains within the Council of Nursing Unions, the process for collective bargaining in Acute Care remains the same in terms of member participation.
